Final Disposition Options

Numerous options exist for final disposition of cremated remains in the State of North Carolina. All options should be carefully considered before making a final decision.

The option of scattering cremated remains should be made very carefully. Many families would like to have a special place of remembrance as a tribute to their loved one, for family heritage and customs. Many people have a personal need for a place for closure and perhaps a marker or memorial. These decisions are important towards making a permanent decision.

Cremated Remains May Be:

  • Kept by family in an urn or other container by a family member
  • Buried on private property with the owner's permission
  • Scattered over uninhabited public land, over public waterway or sea, subject to the health and environment standards
  • Buried in a cemetery
  • Placed in a niche at a mausoleum
