Mr. William Morris Royster, 77, of John McGrady Road, North Wilkesboro, passed away, after a period of declining health, at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem on Saturday morning, April 29, 2023. He died peacefully, was surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at Fairplains Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 6, 2023, with Pastor David Dyer, Pastor Chris Johnson, and Rev. David Key officiating. His body will be placed in the church at 9:30 am prior to the service. Burial will immediately follow the service at Mountlawn Memorial Park in North Wilkesboro.
Mr. Royster was born on May 10, 1945, in North Wilkesboro to Wallace Timothy and Fay Osborne Royster. He grew up in the McGrady community of Wilkes County. His mother and grandmother, Minnie Taylor Osborne, served as the postmasters in McGrady for a combined 55 years, and ran a general store there. His father was a heavy equipment operator who helped build portions of the Blue Ridge Parkway and National Airport in Washington, DC.
Mr. Royster was a 1964 graduate of Wilkes Central High School. He worked for the Abitibi Corporation, American Drew, The Northwestern Bank, and First Union Bank. He was a devoted Christian, faithfully serving as a Deacon for many years at Fairplains Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro, and he was particularly proud to have helped facilitate an all-inclusive playground located at the church. He enjoyed watching NASCAR races, Westerns, Seinfeld, and The Weather Channel, and he loved listening to music by Elvis Presley, the Platters, George Strait, and oldies beach music. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, and was loved by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Wallace Reginald (Reggie) Royster, a Vietnam War veteran and pilot.
He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy Sheets Royster, of the home; his son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Tammy Royster of Kernersville, NC; his daughter and son-in-law, Nichole (Nikki) and Josh Myers of Fletcher, NC; and his beloved granddaughter, Paige Myers, currently a college student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
