Tom R. Smith, 72, went home to be with his Lord & Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, February 2, 2024.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Montise Weaver Smith & Aaron E. Smith, Sr.; a son, Timothy Smith; and “one special aunt” Bertie that taught him about JESUS and how to pray. 

Surviving is his best friend and loving devoted wife of thirty-seven years, Brenda Gerry Smith; his daughter, Angela Smith and, granddaughter Raelynn; his best 4 legged friend, Skylar; brother Aaron Smith and wife Kay; two nephews, Christopher Smith and wife Aimee of Pawleys Island, SC, Sean Smith and wife Laura of San Diego; five great nieces and nephews, Grant, Ashley, Clark, Gabriel, and Emma Smith;  a very special community considered “family”; and  his wonderful and loving brothers and sisters at Marler Road Baptist Church where he was a faithful member.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at Marler Road Baptist Church with Pastor (and loving friend) Randy Johnson officiating.    Burial with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 Honor Guard will follow at Marler Road Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 12:30 PM until 1:30 PM prior to the service at the church.

Tom served in the U.S. Marine Corps as Corporal during the Vietnam Era from 1969 – 1971 receiving the National Defense Service Medal, the Rifle Marksman Medal, two Meritorious Service Awards, the Presidential Letter of Appreciation, and an Honorable Discharge.

Tom attended York County College taking Drafting & Design Technology, Davidson College taking Electronics, Guilford College taking Programing and Logic Control, and Wilkes Community College.   Tom was a master electrician and held his Unlimited License in the states of NC, Ohio, Tennessee, Georgia, Virginia, and Iowa.

He retired from RockTenn Company (now WestRock) in Winston Salem with 25 ½ years of service as Director of Facilities for the Merchandising Display Division.  Tom leaves behind many dear friends at WestRock and appreciates all the opportunities he was given, and the friendships developed. 

GOD blessed Tom with the opportunity to teach Sunday School for over 15 years including Sunday School Superintendent, teaching the New Disciples class for 2 years, and going on many missionary trips to minister to others during disasters.   Tom always said, “I give GOD all the Glory” and “without GOD I am nothing.”

Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Marler Road Baptist Church Building Fund, 4433 Collins Road, Hamptonville NC 27020.

The family would like to thank Gentiva Hospice, his doctors, nurses and therapists and Alisha Everhart and Jessica Ball for their wonderful and loving care.
