Susan Whittington

Ms. Susan Whittington, age 73 of North Wilkesboro passed away Sunday, December 17, 2023, at her home. 

Memorial Services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, January 12, 2024, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with The Rev. Stephanie Parker officiating.  The family will receive friends following the service in the Parish House of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. 

Susan was born April 26, 1950, in Iredell County to Odell Whittington, Jr and Grace Dean Rhodes Whittington. 

Susan earned a BA and MEd from UNCG and an MGA from Wake Forest Babcock School of Management.  After joining New York Life Insurance Company in 1985, she received an MS in Financial Services and added certifications in financial planning, long-term-care planning, and senior planning.  She was a lifetime member of the Million Dollar Round Table. 

Susan was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Wilkesboro, and had served as a member of the choir, vestry, and finance committee.  In 2011, she was ordained a Deacon in the Episcopal Church and ministered in Blowing Rock and Wilkesboro.  She also served the Diocese of Western NC on the Endowment and Fiscal Ministries committees, chairing the latter one, and on the board of the Lake Logan ministry in Canton, NC. 

Her volunteer work was abundant and included Wilkes Art Gallery, Wilkes Chamber of Commerce, Northwest NC Forum, Rainbow Center for Children, and Wilkes Circles of Care.  She was a past chair of the UNCG Alumni Board and Wilkes Community College Board of Trustees and a member of WCC’s Endowment and Investment committees.  She also supported the college through the Whittington Family Scholarship in Diesel Mechanics. 

Susan was a breeder and exhibitor of American Saddlebred horses.  She served as a board member of the Blowing Rock Charity Horse and chair of its Saddlebred show. 

She was inducted into the Wilkes County Hall of Fame in 2023. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Dick Whittington. 

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Reba Whittington of Wilkesboro, two aunts, Martha S. Whittington of Wilkesboro, Maxine S. Whittington of North Wilkesboro, close family friend, Sheila Ann Wingler of North Wilkesboro and several cousins.
