Susan Smith Allen, age 73, of North Wilkesboro passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at her home.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, April 19, 2026, at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel. Burial will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, April 20, 2026 at Gaston Memorial Park.

Susan was born on October 19, 1952, in Mecklenburg County.

Susan lived a life of service, focusing on community agencies. She was a true champion for children and adults through the many organizations that she endlessly volunteered her time. She graduated from Gardner-Webb University with a Bachelor of Science Degree. She later received her Master’s Degree in Education.

Susan had a 36-year teaching career, during which time she developed a passion for helping others. She was involved with the Special Olympics of North Carolina and served as the coordinator for 32 years. After retirement, she remained involved within the community working and volunteering with Blue Ridge First in Families, Child Abuse Prevention Team, Guardian Ad Litem as a Child Advocate, Wilkes DSS Community Advocate, Humane Society, and Wilkes County Cruisers. She received numerous awards and accolades for her community advocacy.

Susan is preceded in death by her parents, Frank Lee and Margeret Merrill Smith and a beloved aunt.

Susan is survived by a son, David Matthew Allen; her brother, James D. Smith and wife Libby, cousins, and numerous close friends.
