Mr. Stacey “Spanky” Eldon Wagoner, age 51 of Purlear passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at Purlear Baptist Church with the casket being placed in the church at 1:30 PM. The Rev. Jamie McGuire and Rev. John Triplett will officiate. Burial with Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 Honor Guard and the North Carolina National Guard will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.
Stacey was born on August 10, 1973, in Wilkes County to Johnny Eldon and Lucille Carroll Wagoner. He was a veteran of the United States Army and National Guard.
Spanky was a beloved person in Wilkes County especially for those involved in the athletics in the area. He loved all the boys that he coached so much that he would refer to them all as “his boys” and considered them all to be like his kids. He coached basketball at West Wilkes Middle School and for the Wilkes County Recreation league. He was a football official and umpired for the middle schools and high schools in Wilkes County and also umpired for Clemmons-Southwest athletics. He was an announcer for the West Wilkes baseball and basketball teams and for the Wilkes County Moonshiners. As a baseball coach his greatest accomplishment was when he won the 2018 State Championship with the Wilkes County All-Star team.
He was preceded in death by his father, Johnny Eldon Wagoner, grandparents, Ruth Brown Wagoner, Willie Fines Carroll and Edwina Robinson Carroll.
He is survived by his wife, Lisa Johnson Wagoner; his mother and stepdad, Lucille and Kenneth Tilley of Purlear; stepson, Travis James Dale (Jacy) of West Columbia, SC; sister, Carrie Vestal (Scotty) of Jonesville; niece, Allyssa Vestal; nephew, Colten Vestal; and aunt, Louise Eller of Wilkesboro.
