Russell "Bert" McNiel

Mr. Russell “Bert” McNiel, age 85, of Purlear, passed away Thursday, December 5, 2024, at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist-Wilkes Medical Center. 

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, December 20, 2024, at Purlear Baptist Church with Rev. Jamie McGuire officiating. Burial with Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 National Guard will be in New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM prior to the service at the church. 

Bert was born May 26, 1939, in Wilkes County to Charles Franklin and Enice Church McNiel. He was a member of Purlear Baptist Church. Bert was a United States Army Veteran. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife; Madge Phillips McNiel, a son; David Levi McNiel, two sisters; Etta Jean Huffman, Virginia Hudson, two brothers; Thomas Lee McNiel, and William “Bill” McNiel. 

He is survived by his daughter; Ida Elizabeth McNiel-Isaacs and husband J.B. Isaacs of Boone, a son; Jesse Morgan McNiel and wife Wendy of Boone, three grandchildren; Levi Chase McNiel Isaacs, Alexandra Victoria McNiel and Thomas Gryphon Mc Niel, daughter-in-law; Remondia Bumgarner of North Wilkesboro, and a brother; Robert “Bob” McNiel of Purlear. 

Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or Purlear Baptist Church, 413 Purlear Road, Purlear, NC 28665.
