Renée Pickard, doing what she loved, died unexpectedly on September 30 in Kanab, Utah while running a race.
Renée lived a very fulfilling life as the mother of 3 sons: Matthew Pickard (Laura), Nathan Pickard (Rebecca) and James Pickard (Lauren). She was blessed with 9 grandchildren: Gillian Hood, Mathias, Christian, and Logan Pickard; Kendall, Clay and Robert Pickard; Grace and Kensley Pickard. In addition, she is survived by her siblings: Vivian “Dusty” Muccio (Tony), Kim Becker (Bob), and Scott Stewart (Karen) and eight nieces and nephews. Also, surviving is her sister-in-law Kathryn Regner. She is predeceased by her husband Kent Pickard; and her parents Bernard and Maria Stewart.
Renée was born in Anchorage, Alaska on November 21, 1958. She graduated from high school in Virginia and then attended Virginia Tech where she met her husband, Kent. After starting a family and living many years in Virginia, Renée and her family planted their roots in Wilkesboro. It was there that she became fitness director of the YMCA, Wilkes Central Track Coach, personal trainer, and owner of her own yoga studio, Train Play Breathe, specializing in acro yoga. Renée was a competitive athlete who participated in many marathons, triathlons, and races across the country such as the Boston Marathon and Marine Corps Marathon. She also ran the 1996 Olympic Torch through Washington, D.C.
Renée was a mentor and inspiration to many over the years, working side by side to develop people's physical and mental health. She showed kindness to everyone she met and will be missed by many. Her light will shine on through all of the lives she touched.
The memorial service is open to the public on Sunday, October 10 at 2 p.m. at Scenic Memorial Gardens, Old Highway 18 South, Moravian Falls, NC 28654. Join us for a celebration of Renée’s life. Dress code is colorful attire to honor the joy that she brought to everyone she met. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ebenezer Christian Children’s Home at P.O.
