Mr. RJ Absher went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, December 23rd at Carolina’s Medical Center in Charlotte.

RJ was born February 7, 1946 to Jesse and Belva Absher.  He drove a truck for 36 years.

First and foremost, RJ loved Jesus.  He was a member of Arbor Grove Baptist Church.  He enjoyed listening to gospel music, especially the Chuck Wagon Gang.

He loved his family with his whole heart.  His wife, Peggy, of 54 years was the love of his life, the sparkle of his eyes.  He adored her and often told her she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.  His daughter, Sherry, he loved with his whole heart.  He raised her to be the best person she could be and gave her love and support always.  He gave her the loving nick-name “Tater-Bug”.  His granddaughter, Alie, was his true jewel.  He loved her with all his being and spoiled her to no end.  Alie and her paw-paw were truly best friends connected heart to heart.

RJ loved his Country.  He was proud to be an American.  He fought for our country in the Vietnam War.  He was so proud to be a Marine.  He always said “Once a Marine, always a Marine”.

His love for animals made him the kind of person he was.  He loved to feed the wild birds and the squirrels around his house.  He also had a great love for dogs – he never met a dog he did not like.  He has often jokingly said that he had rather be around dogs than people because they love you unconditionally.

RJ was preceded in death by his father; Jesse James Absher, mother, Belva Billings Absher, mother, Hettie Jane Absher, brothers; Roy Roger Absher and Mack Junior Absher, in-laws, Fred and Helen Roope, Carolyn Wood and Tommy Walker.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Peggy Wood Absher of the home, his daughter, Sherry Absher of Hays, his granddaughter, Alie Absher of Hays, sister, Kimberly Matthews and husband Chris of Taylorsville, brother, Jeffery Webb of Wilkesboro.  Also, his in-laws, Ronnie and Kathy McMillan of North Wilkesboro, Ellen Walker of Hays and Kenneth Wood of North Wilkesboro.  RJ is also survived by numerous loving nieces, nephews and his best four-legged friend, Zander.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, December 29, 2024, at Arbor Grove Baptist Church with Pastor Kyle Chapman and Rev. Ronnie McMillan officiating.   Burial with Military Honors by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 Honor Guard will be in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 12:45 until 1:45 PM prior to the service at the church.

RJ will be greatly missed by his family.  He was the absolute best husband, daddy and paw-paw ever.  Heaven is getting sweeter all the time.  In the sweet by and by, we will meet on that beautiful shore.  This is not goodbye but see you again soon to spend eternity together.  Until then, I wish you blue-birds Daddy.

The family request no food.  Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Wilkes, PO Box 306, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.
