Miss Peggy Jane Mitchell of Wilkesboro, North Carolina passed away peacefully on October 23, 2025, in the company of family and surrounded by love.
Peggy was born on January 31, 1934, in Wilkes County to Edgar Spainhour and Mary Elizabeth Joines Mitchell. The youngest of six children, Peggy grew up understanding the value of a dollar but knowing that the true value in life comes from the love of family and friendship. Though she never got the opportunity to marry, she was never alone. From attending school at Appalachian State University, to her many years teaching at Camp Lejeune Dependent Schools and substituting back home in Wilkesboro, Peggy was rarely seen without the companionship of her dearest sister Earnestine, and they together with their friends from Jacksonville and other sisters Marjorie, Louise, and Bernice. Preceded in death by all, including brother RD and many dear cousins, Peggy had quite the welcoming party awaiting her before proceeding into the open arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
She is survived by her nephews Charles Mitchell and wife Marie, Dee Mitchell and wife Claudia, many great, twice great, and thrice great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her great-great-niece whom she raised as a daughter Elizabeth Royal and husband Scotty, and their children Lucas and Emily who loved their “Gran” dearly.
A graveside service will be held 2:00 PM, Sunday November 2, 2025 at Union United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Al Andrews officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial can be made to The Wounded Warrior Project, 1990 Fordham Drive, Suite 100, Fayetteville, NC 28304.
