Nannie Panton Obituary

Nannie Lee Stone Shew Panton passed away peacefully at her childhood home place surrounded by her family on October 4, 2021. She was born January 30, 1927 to Harley and Nettie Stone.  She grew up on the family farm in the Rock Creek area alongside her sister, Juanita and brother, Alan. Nannie Lee and her first husband, Clarence, had three sons, Jack, Lee and Steve and one daughter, Nina. She had twelve grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and six great- great grandchildren.

Nannie Lee completed her Bachelor's degree in psychology from Appalachian State University and Master's Degree from N.C State University. She worked many years as a social worker doing what she loved best, which is helping to improve the lives of others.

One of her greatest accomplishments as a social worker was her ground breaking work to develop Adult Day Care Centers in the Raleigh area in the 1970's. She also often spoke of her fond memories of her work with children at the Crossnore School and Children's Home and BROC.

Her talents included sewing and cooking. The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Nannie. She loved the mountains, the fall leaves, snowy days, growing flowers, and spending time with family, whether at sporting events, competitions, special events or just a fun day with her.

Nannie Lee was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who always showed more concern for others than for herself. She was the happiest when she was surrounded by family.  She led by example by living a life that was driven by her desire to be Christ like. Nannie Lee was a strong fighter and advocate for those less fortunate and endured many hardships never losing her faith in Jesus Christ, or her country.

Nannie was preceded in death by her second husband, Major James Panton who lived in Raleigh.

She will be greatly missed, but will leave behind a legacy of faith and love for her family and others. The peace comes with knowing that she is now with her Savior and Lord.

An outdoor service will be held at a private cemetery on Stone Brewer Road in Rock Creek on Sunday, October 10, 2021 at 3:00 pm with Rev. Marvin Blackburn and Rev. Travis Brown officiating. She will lie in state at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home from 9:30 AM until 2:00 PM Sunday
