Mr. Leon Gwyn Hunt, age 81 of Roaring River passed away Saturday, October 3, 2020 at his home after an extended illness.
Graveside Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Friday, October 9, 2020 at Poplar Spring Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Romie Horton, Rev. Roosevelt Carlton and Rev. James Joyce officiating. Mr. Hunt can be viewed Thursday beginning at 12:00 PM with the family receiving friends from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.
Mr. Hunt was born October 5, 1938 in Wilkes County to Clyde Ovid and Lollie Gwyn Hunt. He was an active member of Poplar Spring Baptist Church where he served as Usher Board Chairman and was a favorite among the little children because he was quick to spoil them with a treat or toy. He retired from the Wilkes County School Garage as a mechanic after 30 years of service, though his passion for the job led him to return for an additional 10 years. He was also an active member of the Roaring River Ruritan Club and the Roaring River Fire Department. Mr. Hunt graduated from Lincoln Heights High School with the Class of 1956 and received an Associate Degree in Auto Mechanics from North Carolina A&T State University in 1958.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters; Sarah O. Hunt Whittington and Edith Hunt and three brothers, Ellis Lee Hunt, Oliver Glenn Hunt, Loyal Hunt, and a daughter Beverly G. Hartso .
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Alexander Hunt of the home, two daughters, Chalma Wynola Hunt of Wilkesboro and Kaysonnia Lytessia Hunt of St. Louis, MO and two grandchildren, McKinley John Harvey Armstrong III of Washington, DC and Jacqueline Noel Armstrong Johnson (Chase) of Greensboro, NC and one sister, Norma J. Hunt Hester of Maryland, and a host of beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
At the family’s request, masks and social distancing protocols will be in place.
