Mr. Kenneth “Ken” Edwin Byrd, 86 of Roaring River, passed away on January 19, 2023 at Woltz Hospice Home.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, January 28, 2023 at White Plains Baptist Church with Rev. William Souther, Rev. David Dyer, Rev. Gene Roten, Rev. Ken Pardue and Rev. Ronnie McMillian officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from noon until 1:30 PM prior to the service at the church.
Mr. Byrd was born September 20, 1936, in Wilkes County to Paul and Pearl Eva Blackburn Byrd.
Kenneth had a great love for his church, family and friends. He held callings in his church as Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, Choir Director and Deacon.
Previous work experiences included Contractor Salesman for Lowe’s Home Improvement, Western and Southern Life Insurance and Broadcaster in WJOS Radio in Elkin. Ken helped rescue 3WC Solid Gospel Radio from bankruptcy and was News Director and DJ, starting the live Sports Broadcasting program for our four county high schools. From the beginning of the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival in 1978, Kenneth was the Master of Ceremonies inviting wonderful groups and individuals to sing on the make shift stage of the Wilkes Journal Patriot. This was dear to his heart. In fact, while Ken was recovering in the hospital in October of 2022 he continued to insist that he be released for just the appointed time to announce the upcoming singers. As fate would have it the singing was rained out.
In 2010 his wife, Dr. Fay Byrd was the inspiration and author of Wilkes County Bits and Pieces…Kenneth and their grandson, Kenny went throughout the county taking pictures of over 300 churches to be used within the book.
Kenneth enjoyed fishing and bowling…holding the highest men’s two-year average, singer/songwriter and sung with the Christian Harmonizers and the Inheritan’s Quartet. All who knew Ken loved him. Most every time when visitors and family would leave this side, he would sing “If we never meet again this side of Heaven, I will meet you on that beautiful Shore”.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by four sisters, Mozelle Byrd, Wilma Jordan, Bernice Elmore, and Maxine Gibson; and two brothers, Clarence Byrd and Roscoe Byrd.
Mr. Byrd is survived by his wife, Ida Faye Caudle Byrd, of the home; one daughter, Teressa “Terrie” Byrd and Billy Osborne of Harmony; one son, Edwin Scott Byrd and wife, Pam, of Roaring River; three grandchildren, Brandon McGuire, Alisha Byrd and wife Maria, and Kenny Byrd and wife Hannah; nine great-grandchildren; and one sister, Peggy Miller of Portland, Oregon.
