June Wessinger Scroggs died on Tuesday, April 1st. She was 96 years old, born on December 3, 1928, in Newberry, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the Rev. Joseph S. and Jessie Oxner Wessinger. June was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, William Clegg Scroggs, Jr. and her son William Clegg Scroggs III both of Moravian Falls, N.C. Survivors include her son, John Wessinger Scroggs, and grandson, William Clegg Scroggs, IV and granddaughter-in-law Emily Michelle Scroggs, of Wilkes County, N.C., Mrs. Scroggs was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters.
Mrs. Scroggs graduated from China Grove High School, China Grove, N. C., second in her class. She graduated from Lenoir Rhyne College (now University), Hickory, N. C. in the Second Honor Group with an A.B. Major in Business Education and Minors in Social Studies and English in 1949. While there she was a member of the Alpha Psi Omega Dramatic Fraternity, as a member of the LR Playmakers, received the four- year acting award, the Iota Epsilon Journalistic Fraternity, the International Club having attended as a delegate to a United Nations Seminar. She received an M.A. Degree in Business Education with Majors in Secondary Education and Junior College from Appalachian State Teachers College (now University) in 1965.
She came to Wilkesboro, N.C. in 1949 as an instructor at Clevenger Business College. She was transferred to Lancaster, S.C. to begin a branch of that college there. All Clevenger Colleges were closed. She returned to Wilkes County to teach the last two years of the North Wilkesboro High School System and the 1952 beginning of the consolidated North Wilkesboro-Wilkesboro Wilkes Central High School in the County System until 1958 as a Business Education Teacher and Office Assistant. With the opening of Wilkes Community College in l965, Mrs. Scroggs accepted the head of the Business Education Division for four years. She accepted a position with the Federal Judicial Court System in Wilkes County as a Probation Senior Clerk, retiring after 21 years.
Mrs. Scroggs was active in many community and church groups. She was a Charter member of The Lutheran Church of the Atonement, Wilkesboro. At times, June served as Church Council Secretary, President of the Church Council, Head of the Church Building Committee, Teacher of the Adult Sunday School Class from 1951-2015, and President or Treasurer of the Lutheran Women’s Group. She was an officer in the Western N. C. Lutheran Church Women’s Organization. The family will hold a private memorial service at Moravian Falls Cemetery with Rev. Steve Snipes and Pastor Roger Hull officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The Lutheran Church of the Atonement, 243 Oakwoods Road, Wilkesboro, NC 28697 or to The Rev. J.S.
