Jerry Lenderman Obituary

Mr. Jerry Hugh Lenderman, age 86 of N. Wilkesboro passed away Monday, November 7, 2022 at Woltz Hospice Home.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, November 12, 2022 at Hinshaw Street Baptist Church with Rev. Sherrill Wellborn officiating.  Burial will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends from  6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Friday, November 11, 2022 at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Jerry was born September 20, 1936 in Wilkes County to Charles and Ruth Pruitt Lenderman. Jerry’s grandfather, Rev. J.C. Pruitt, was the founding minister of Hinshaw Street Baptist Church.  Jerry’s mother, Ruth Lenderman, who passed away July 21, 2013 was the last Charter Member of the church and Jerry was the last family member of the original Charter Members.  Jerry’s mother brought Jerry to church when he was just 3 weeks old. Jerry began his church life in the church choir with his mother. When Jerry was old enough to stand on his own he would stand on the pew and sing the old hymns even before he could read. Jerry accepted Christ at the age of 13. He served in several capacities in the church including Choir Member, Sunday School Director, Kitchen committee where he cooked great meals on Wednesday nights, and  Pastor Search Committee member.

Jerry had a great love for music, including listening to others, playing the guitar and singing.  In the 1960’s he along with some friends formed a band known as The Country Gentlemen.  Later he joined with others and was in The Entertainers.  They would play benefits, schools, clubs and were fortunate enough to play opening shows for such Stars as Bill Anderson, Little Jimmy Dickens, Jack Greene, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Connie Smith. They also backed Charlie McCoy and Bobby G. Rice for several local dates.

In the early 60’s Jerry had a chance to go to Nashville with an agent but chose to stay in Wilkes because he had a family and a good job at the Post Office.  Jerry retired from the post office with 34 ½ years of service.

In Addition to Jerry’s full time at the Post Office, performing music, Working for CarQuest and cooking at the Jubilee Junction, Jerry owned and operated Lenderman’s Photography doing portraits and weddings for 15 years in the late 80’s and 90’s

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son; Jeff Lenderman.

He is survived by his wife; Hazel Lenderman of the home, a son; Keith Lenderman and wife Pam of Wilkesboro, a granddaughter; Kelly Plumley and husband John Ryan of Charleston, SC, three great-grandchildren; Drew, Emma, and Benjamin, and a sister; Jane Jarvis of Wilkesboro.
