Mr. James “Jim” Walter Day, age 95, of Wilkesboro, passed away Friday, March 20, 2026, at Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Wilkesboro United Methodist Church with Rev. Karen Roberts officiating with a reception to follow in the fellowship hall. A Private Committal Service with Military Honors by the VFW Post 1142 Honor Guard will be held.
Jim was born January 1, 1931, in Wilkes County to Walter M. and Sallie Gantt Day. He was a member of Wilkesboro United Methodist Church where he was past board President of the Administrative Council and Pastor Parish Staff. Jim was a member of Kiwanis of Wilkesboro, Young Eagle’s Pilot, was a lifelong aviation enthusiast, receiving his pilot’s license at 16 years old. He loved his Cessna 182 and Ercoupe airplanes and flying until he was 84 years old. He loved spending time with Pat and his family on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Jim served in the United States Air Force from 1950-1954, where he was assigned to Warren Airforce Base in Cheyenne Wyoming and Tennessee Polytechnic Institute. Jim was a graduate of Lenoir Rhyne University class of 1957.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Kelly; and his brother, Franklin G. Day.
He is survived by his wife, Pat Day of the home; two sons, J. Alan Day (Naomi) of Newport, NC, Larry Day (Edith Ann) of North Wilkesboro; four grandchildren, Julianna Day Knollmann (Alex), Allison Day, Hunter Day (Shelby), Mackenzie Day; three great-grandchildren, James Whitworth Knollmann, Hunter Beaumont Knollmann, and Eloise Claiborne Knollmann.
