Jack Orendorf Claycomb, 86, of Wilkesboro, North Carolina, passed away on February 26, 2025, after a long battle with dementia. He was born on June 14, 1938, in Owensboro, Kentucky, to David and Lydia “L.E.” Claycomb. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Jerry Claycomb, and his beloved wife of sixty-four years, Carol Hires Claycomb, who passed just two months prior.
Jack is survived by his three sons: Chris Claycomb and wife, Debi, of Wilkesboro, North Carolina; Paul Claycomb and wife, Lesa, of Corinth, Texas; and John Claycomb and wife, Kristin, of Huntersville, North Carolina. He was the much-loved “Grandpa Jack” to his eight grandchildren: Courtney Claycomb-Colbert (Justin Colbert) of Wilkesboro; Ian Claycomb of Charlotte; Payton Claycomb (Dr. Taylor Hayes) of Holly Springs; Aaron Claycomb, Will Claycomb, and Luke Claycomb of Corinth, Texas; and Ryan Claycomb and Bennett Claycomb of Huntersville. His legacy continues through his two great-grandchildren: Beau Colbert of Wilkesboro and Emmie Claycomb of Holly Springs.
Jack spent his early years on his family’s farm in Irvington, Kentucky, and spent most winters in Crescent City, Florida. He graduated from the University of Kentucky before beginning a career as an auditor for General Electric. Later, he worked for American Drew in North Wilkesboro as Comptroller, before becoming Vice President of Finance in High Point, North Carolina. He returned to General Electric for assignments out West before retiring.
In retirement, Jack and Carol enjoyed traveling and playing golf. Known for his storytelling and warm sense of humor, he made friends wherever. He will be deeply missed by all.
A private ceremony will be held at a later date for Jack and Carol in their beloved second home in Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Alzheimer’s Association, 4600 Park Road Suite 250, Charlotte NC 28209.
