Hiram Cox Obituary

Mr. Hiram Woodie Cox, age 89 of North Wilkesboro passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2022 at SECU Hospice Home in Yadkinville.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, April 14, 2022 at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Pastor Tim Bullington officiating.  Entombment will be Mountlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.  The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:30 PM prior to the service at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Hiram was born November 13, 1932 in Ashe County to Thomas Jefferson and Gladys Woodie Cox.  Hiram grew up on a farm in Ashe County where he loved to fish and hunt, as well as working the farm with his father.  The family later moved to North Wilkesboro where Hiram spent his junior and senior years at North Wilkesboro High School.  He was a fierce football competitor, who once reluctantly exited the game for a brief period to spit out his teeth, and then returned to play.

He graduated high school at seventeen and begged his parents to sign for him to enter the United States Navy, where he served for four years during the Korean War.  His ship, the USS A. A. Cunningham, was actively engaged in battle close to the Korean shore where the ship was once hit and damaged by the enemy.

After his Military service he went to college on the GI Bill at Appalachian State University where he met his wife, Sarah Hall and was married for fifty-six years before Sarah’s passing.  They had and raised three children together.  He taught in the Wilkes County School System for 30 years. During the summer months he worked as a W. Kerr Scott Dam Ranger.

After retirement Hiram was a delighted cattle farmer. He loved his cows and thought they were beautiful.  He also loved to hunt and fish with his friend, Tony Winkler.  He also had a thriving garden on the old Ashe County farm every year.  He learned his gardening skills from his mother, Gladys Cox, who was a fantastic gardener.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Hall Cox, a son, Charles Wesley Cox, brother-in-law, John B. Doby, sister-in-law, Fonda Hincher Cox, nephew, Lucas Jefferson Doby and also many special aunts, uncles and cousins.

He is survived by two daughters; Connie Sue Cox and Kathleen Delores Cox, grandson, Charles Hiram Cox, brother, Thomas Jefferson Cox, sister, Carol Cox Doby and special first cousins, Shirley Long Hall and Libby Jo Long Bruner.

Hiram was a wonderful person who always looked for the good in everyone.  He was a faithful servant of the Lord, and rarely missed a Sunday service at Hinshaw Street Baptist Church.  He was deeply loved by his family and close friends.  Hiram will never be forgotten and will be forever missed.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Hinshaw Street Baptist Church, PO Box 396, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.
