Mr. Dewitt Warren Souther, age 98 of North Wilkesboro took his heavenly flight on Sunday, May 3, 2020. He was born to Riley Lee Souther and Bertie Goldie Moore on March 20, 1922.
Private Graveside services will be held at Fishing Creek Arbor Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. David Wellborn officiating. Mr. Souther will lie in state from 2:00PM until 6:00 PM Tuesday, May 5, 2020 and from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM on Wednesday, May 6, 2020 at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.
Mr. Souther was preceded in death by his wife Gradie Hendren Souther; two sons, Thomas Souther and Earl Souther and son-in-law Wayne Minton; brothers, Freddy, Paris, Eugene, Narvie and Burrette Souther; and sisters, Rachel Robinson and Lella Jones.
He is survived by one son, Roland Souther (Donna) of the home; daughter, Sheila Minton, North Wilkesboro, Grandchildren: Tonya Smith (Gary), Wilkesboro; Teresa Foster (Michael), Sherrills Ford; David Souther (Meleah), Wilkesboro; Bobby Minton, North Wilkesboro, Ginger Souther Dixon (Chris), Winston Salem.Great Grandchildren: Ian Foster, Jonathan Smith, Zachary Smith, Ava Souther, Grant Souther and Charlotte Dixon. He is also survived by two sisters, Stella Marshall of Winston Salem and Julia Steelman of Wilkesboro; daughter-in-law Diane Souther of Wilkesboro. Several nieces and nephews are left with beautiful memories of a life well lived.
Mr. Souther served in the US Army in New Guinea and the Southern Philippines. He was awarded 2 Bronze Service Stars in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and 1 Bronze Star in the Philippine Liberation along with a Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal. He worked for the U.S. Post Office for 30 years as a mail carrier after many years working at various furniture companies and lumber yards. After retirement he spent his time working in his orchard and garden which he shared with neighbors and family. He enjoyed hunting and fishing whenever possible even going to Canada, Cherokee and the Outer Banks.Mr. Souther was a member of Fishing Creek Arbor Baptist Church where he was a Deacon for over 60 years, Choir Director for 30 years, Church Clerk, Sunday School Teacher, an Elder, and served on various committees. He was a gentle and humble man who loved his family, his country and most of all his God.

The family wants to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at Westwood Hills Nursing for their care and compassion, especially to Ann, Bob, Eddie, Lonnie, and Paula. The family will have a public memorial service at a later date.
