Dessie Mae (Handy) Whitley

Mrs. Dessie Mae Handy Whitley, age 83 of North Wilkesboro, widow of Buster Royal Whitley, died Friday, July 31, 2020 at Wake Forest Baptist Health – Wilkes Medical Center.

Private family services will be held at New Covenant Baptist Church with Rev. Jessie Whitley and Rev. Don Myers officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery. 

Mrs. Whitley was born March 14, 1937 in Wilkes County to Clarence and Maetokie Shumate Handy.  She was a member of New Covenant Baptist Church and a wonderful mom, grandmother, great-grandmother who loved her family!

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Sherry Renee Whitley; one son, Kenny Buster Whitley; one sister, Martha Whitley; and one brother, Hubbard Handy. 

She is survived by three daughters, Kathy Ann Lacks and husband, Tom, of Hays, Brenda Kaye Taylor and husband, Sammy, of McGrady, and Linda Gail Myers and husband, Rodney, of North Wilkesboro; two sons, Denny Hubbard Whitley and wife, Maria, of McGrady, and David Dwayne Whitley and wife, Ann, of North Wilkesboro; ten grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; three sisters, Gladys Bell and Delcie Billings of North Wilkesboro, and Mary Shumate of Traphill. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Covenant Baptist Church, c/o Carolyn Osborne, 2476 Christian Home Church Road, Traphill NC 28685.
