Debra Ann (Handy) Hawkins

After a courageous battle with cancer, Mrs. Debra Handy Hawkins, age 66 of McGrady passed away Monday, September 11, 2023, at her home. 

Debra was born October 23, 1956, in Wilkes County to Clayton and Eula Shumate Handy. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, and sister. She enjoyed spending time with her family, wanting everyone to know how much she loved them. As a lifelong nurse, Debra’s passion was caring for the elderly. 

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, September 17, 2023 at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Pastor Matt Sherman and Pastor Clate Handy officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Baptist Church Cemetery in McGrady on Cane Creek Church Road. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Saturday, September 16, 2023 at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband, Kenneth Russell Hawkins. 

She is survived by two daughters, Rhiannon Prevette (John) of North Wilkesboro, Kendra Johnson (Chris) of McGrady; five grandchildren, Isaac Prevette, Chandler Johnson, Chase Johnson, Kymber Ayers, Corbin Johnson; mother-in-law, Edith Wyatt of McGrady; two sisters, Audrey Shumate (Dean) of North Wilkesboro, Barbara McCoy of McGrady; a brother, Clayton Handy, Jr. (Debby) of McGrady; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Viles (Ricky) of McGrady and many loving nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
