David Robert Smithey

Mr. David Robert Smithey, age 72 of Moravian Falls passed away Sunday, April 14, 2024 at Atrium Health-Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. 

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at Bethany Baptist Church with Rev. Donnie Shumate and Preacher Chris Taylor officiating.  The casket will be placed in the church at 10:30 AM.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Tuesday evening at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. 

David was born July 27, 1951 to Plato and Grace Ball Smithey and lived in Wilkes all his life.

David worked as a courier at First Union Bank for several years and retired from the NC Department of Transportation where he was known as “Snake”.  He enjoyed watching the Andy Griffith Show and David’s biggest joy was his family who he loved very much.  He also enjoyed talking to people he met while he worked at Quality Oil after his retirement.     

He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Shirley Cardwell and Bernell Alexander and brother, Dwight Smithey and Jerry Smithey. 

He is survived by his wife, Lois Tedder Smithey, daughter, Margaret (Michael) Younce of Moravian Falls.   Grandchildren, Megan (Brandon) Harrold of Wilkesboro, Caleb (Leslie) Younce of Moravian Falls.  Great grandsons, Memphis Younce and Oliver Harrold.  Brother, Darrell Smithey of Wilkesboro and sister, Wanda (Paul) Brookshire of Hiddenite and several nieces and nephews. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethany Baptist Church of the Brushies Cemetery Fund, PO Box 759, Moravian Falls, NC 28654.
