Dan met his wife, Carla, at an after-school job at Key City Bakery when he was sixteen years old. After their marriage they went on to become owners and managers of the bakery, a staple in the community, for many years. He later became a real estate appraiser for the North Carolina Department of Transportation. He was a Boy Scout leader, member of the Brushy Mountain Ruritans, the North Wilkesboro Elks Lodge and was also a member of The Sons of the American Revolution. Faith, community and family were most important in his life.

Dan is preceded in death by his parents, Naomi and Harold Parks. He is survived by his wife, Carla; children, Daniel (Jaclyn) Parks and Anna (Doug) Shartzer; five granddaughters, Sophie, Molly, Eloise, Emerson and Caris; and a brother, Jim (Brenda) Parks and their daughters Jamie (Darryl) Barron and Jodi (Bobby) Myers.
