Chessie Wagoner Shumate

Mrs. Chessie Wagoner Shumate, age 90 of McGrady passed away Monday, January 11, 2021.

Funeral services 2:00 PM Friday, January 15, 2021 at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with her son; Rev. Donny Shumate officiating.  The family will receive friends from 12:45 until 1:45 PM prior to the service at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.  Burial will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park.  

Mrs. Shumate was born April 26, 1930 in Wilkes County to Harrison B. and Mertie Royal Wagoner.  She was an excellent quilter and she loved making crafts.  She was a member of Christian Assembly Church. 

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband; William Clarence Shumate, Sr. and a daughter; Judy Carol Shumate. 

She is survived by three daughters; Gail Shumate-Eller of North Wilkesboro, Diane Blevins and husband Garry of Lansing, Kay Shumate Bening of Addieville, IL, six sons; Rex Shumate and wife MaryLou of McGrady, Bill Shumate and wife Toni of North Wilkesboro, Ronnie Shumate and wife Betty of McGrady, Rev. Donny Shumate and wife Kay of McGrady, Ray Shumate and wife Gail of North Wilkesboro, Bobby Shumate and wife Leann of Taylorsville, twenty-one grandchildren; Donna Rhodes, Richard Shumate, Scott Shumate, Wendy Howell, Misty Jackson, Ronnie Shumate, Jr., Jennifer Shumate, Michael Shumate, Bonita Hall, Brian Shumate, Nettie Cothren, Brittany McSwaim, Jesse Dyer, Matthew Shumate, Allyssa Shumate, Steven Tooley, Natasha Jarden, Emily Bening, William Bening, Benjamin Shumate, Jonathan Shumate, two step-grandchildren; Teresa Griffin and Michael Griffin, forty-eight great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, three sisters; Peggy Jean Edwards and husband Junior of North Wilkesboro, Gladys Stamper of McGrady, Lorene Wood of McGrady and a brother; Willie Wagoner of North Wilkesboro. 

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Donor’s Choice.
