Psalm 19:14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.
Bernice Horton Carlton 69, also affectionately known as “Bird” was born May 7, 1954 in Caldwell County, to the union of Zora Mae Carlton and Howard Thomas Horton who preceded her in death.
Bernice accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior at a young age. She received her education at Wilkes Central High School. Bernice worked in the furniture industry, sewing/manufacturing, healthcare as Dietary Manager at a nursing facility and most recently at the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office. She retired in the early 2000’s.
She was a very nurturing person and she was the type of person you could always depend on, no matter if you were family, friends, or a stranger. She loved her family and friends with a sincere and humble heart and her favorite flower was the rose. There are so many wonderful memories of her that it would take more than a few hours to reflect on her life. She was honest, raw, and straightforward when it came to her daughter and grandchild.
Bernice will be greatly missed. She had a zeal for life, but after a years long battle with multiple health issues, Bernice ascended to Christ on March 26, 2024 in Wilkesboro NC, at Ridge Valley Nursing Facility. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Ray Carlton and her siblings; James H. Horton, Doris H. Smith, Vera A Carlton, and Shirley Gibbs.
Bernice is leaving to cherish her funny and loving memory on daughter; Keisha Carlton, one grandchild; Izaiah Carlton, sisters; Janet (Harold) Reid of Lenoir, NC and Naomi S (Jefffrey) Miller of Taylorsville, NC, numerous nieces, nephews, and two very special aunts; Gertrude Parsons and Florence Carlton, and special friends; Denise Saner, Avalee Carlton, Lillian Hairston, and Arnita Horton.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, March 30, 2024, at Thankful Baptist Church with Rev. Monte Simmons and Rev. Graylin Carlton officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM prior to the service at the church.
Flowers will be accepted.
