Mrs. Barbara Shumate Stewart, age 68 of Moravian Falls passed away Tuesday, August 29, 2023 at her home. 

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, September 2, 2023 at Bethany Baptist Church in the Brushy Mountain Community with Rev. Chris Taylor and Rev. Steve Snipes officiating.  Burial will be in Mountain Park Cemetery in Wilkesboro.  The family will receive friends from 11:30 AM until 12:30 PM prior to the service at the church. 

Barbara was born July 15, 1955 in Iredell County.  She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church, she graduated from Wilkes Central High School and Kings College.  She retired after 40 years of service at Charles H. Litaker Insurance Agency in Charlotte.  She was a past President of the Charlotte Insurance Women’s Association. She loved being surrounded by her family, hosting holiday get-togethers and her little fur babies; Daisy and Jake.

In addition to her mother; Gay Ashley Shumate, she was preceded in death by her  brother-in-law; Shelton Cothren. 

She is survived by her loving husband of 31 years; Tommy Stewart of the home, three sisters; Patricia Cothren of North Wilkesboro, Nancy Eller and husband Frank of Moravian Falls, Alice Cass of Salisbury and a brother; Steve Shumate and wife Pat of North Wilkesboro, four sisters-in-law; Pat Ward and husband Denton of Homer, GA, Nancy Minton and husband Steve of Millers Creek, Judy Shepherd and husband Blain of Concord, Betty Reeves and husband Rickey of Millers Creek and a host of nieces and nephews.
