Anne Carter Groce

Mrs. Era Anne Carter Groce, age 75, of Wilkesboro passed away September 4, 2022 following several years of declining health. Despite her challenges she faced every day with grace and dignity and continued to lift others with her positive attitude. 

A Celebration of Life service will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, November 20, 2022 at Wilkesboro United Methodist Church with Rev. Karen H. Roberts officiating.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Church Fellowship Hall.

Anne was born March 10, 1947 in Surry County to Daniel and Mae Cockerham Carter. She was a woman of faith and a member of Wilkesboro United Methodist Church. After retiring from East Coast Millwork Distributors she began teaching water aerobics and other fitness classes at the YMCA including Special Olympics. She appreciated the simple things in life like taking family photos, spoiling her grandchildren, flowers, the beach, trips to Blowing Rock for shopping and ice cream, lemon-filled donuts, her signature scent Estee Lauder Beautiful, and most of all spending time with her family. 

In addition to her parents, Anne was preceded in death by her son, Kirk Boyd, and brothers Everette and David Carter. 

Survivors include her loving husband, Art Groce of the home; daughters, Celeste (Chris) Shumate of Valdez, Alaska and Melanie Boyd Baker of Chardon, Ohio; mother-in-law Barbara Groce of Wilkesboro, North Carolina, and her faithful canine friend Beau. Grandchildren: Dru Boyd, Anna Shumate, Tim Compton, Forrest Shumate, Joy Paige Shumate, Tyler Bowman, Evan Baker, Ethan Baker, and great-granddaughter, Nola Doherty. 

The family has appreciated the numerous calls, visits, flowers, and cards Anne received prior to her death. Anne had many dear friends. The family will be forever grateful to Jeannie Joines and Anita Turner who provided excellent care and friendship to Anne this past year.
