Tracy Walker Obituary

R. Tracy Walker, 82, of Wilkesboro passed away Monday, Oct. 14, 2019, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.  

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, 2019, at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel, with the Rev. Steve Smith officiating.  Burial, with military honors provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142, will be in Mountain Park Cemetery in Wilkesboro. The family received friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2019, at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Mr. Walker was born July 27, 1937, in Wilkes County to Charles Frank. Sr. and Margie Lou Adams Walker. 

Mr. Walker had 30 years of public service which included membership on the Wilkes County Board of Education, 1972-1976; membership on the Wilkes County Board of Commissioners, 1978- 1996 and chairman of the board, 1984-1986 and 1990-1991; and member of the N.C. House of Representatives - District 94, 2001-2008, where he was chairman of the Local Government Committee and vice chairman of the State Personnel Committee.

Mr. Walker was also chairman of Northwestern Regional Housing Authority, 1979-1984; chairman of the Region D Council of Governments, 1988-1990; member of the Wilkes County Republican Executive Committee, 2001-2008; member of the Wilkes County Economic Development Board, 1999-2004; and a member of the Wilkes Community College Board of Trustees from 2016 to the present.

Mr. Walker served as a founding member of the Mountain View Medical Center and the Blue Ridge Water Association. He was the first president of the North Wilkes High School Athletic Booster Club and a charter member of the Mountain View Ruritan Club.

Tracy Walker demonstrated his loyal commitment to Republican Party values through his lifelong service to the people of Wilkes County and North Carolina.

He spent a lifetime in community leadership and support, including 30 years of elected service in GOP positions. His involvement in the Wilkes County Republican Party was demonstrated by his support of other Republican candidates and by stressing the importance of Wilkes County precincts.

He retired from Chatham Manufacturing, where he was personnel manager, and was a member of Wilkesboro Baptist Church and First Light Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Ryan Thomas Walker, and a brother, Charles Frank “Pee-Wee” Walker Jr.

He is survived by his wife, Nena Watkins Walker of the home; two sons, Randy Walker and wife, Shannon, of Wilkesboro and Kirk Walker and wife, Kim, of North Wilkesboro; four grandchildren, Chad Walker and wife, Megan, Caitlin Walker, Brandon Walker and wife, Ashley, and Whitney Nolan and husband, Chris; and six great grandchildren.
