Rev. Montreal Howell, age 100 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at Caldwell Hospice Home in Lenoir, NC.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 25, 2020 at Thankful Baptist Church with Rev. Monte Simmons officiating. The body will lie in state from 1:00 until 2:00. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 Friday night at Reins Sturdivant Funeral Home.
Rev. Howell was born October 23, 1919 in Wilkes County to William Randall Howell and Lula Carlton Howell. He retired from Broyhill Furniture where he worked for 34 years. He was a member of Thankful Baptist Church. Rev. Howell was the Song Leader for traditional singing of Christian Harmony, a moderator for Yadkin valley Baptist Association for 18 years, served as the Pastor at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church for 40 years and Parks Grove for 4 years. He was the oldest living African American Male in Wilkes County. He published a book, “You Know How It is NOW take a look at How It was THEN”.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife; Julia Novella Carlton Howell and his second wife; Mary Welborn Howell, three sons; Jones Alton Howell, Wilson Howell and Berton Howell and a daughter; Verona Howell, six sisters and eight brothers.
He is survived by seven sons; Norman Howell of North Wilkesboro, James Alfred Howell of Long Beach CA, Russell Howell and wife Mollie Burns Howell of Boomer, Samuel Howell and wife Tony Carlton Howell of Boomer, Ronald Howell and wife Althea Barnes Howell of Boomer, Roland Howell and wife Susie of CA, Effley Dean Howell and wife Frankie Williams Howell of Kernersville and a daughter; Julia Annette Howell, twenty four grandchildren, forty five great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren.
