Russell Edwin Dancy, a devoted and caring friend, departed this life on April 18, 2024. Born on July 25, 1947, he was the son of Eugene T. and Agnes S. Dancy. He grew up in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, and attended Wilkes Central High School, where he formed many lifelong friendships.
In 1969, he graduated from Wake Forest University with a degree in history. He attended graduate school at Wake Forest and the University of Tennessee, earning both an M.A. and an M.Ed. Russell maintained a longtime interest in North Carolina history. Published as Blood and Honor in 2015, his master’s thesis has been cited in discussions of the antebellum and Civil War eras.
His work life included roles as an auditor with the Internal Revenue Service in Fayetteville, North Carolina; as a guidance counselor in Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and as a psychology and history instructor at Forsyth Technical Community College in Winston-Salem.
Russell formed many close bonds throughout his life. A generous friend, he often provided support to those who were struggling and faced setbacks in his own life with grace and insight. Disguised beneath a shy exterior, his dry sense of humor surprised those who knew him. He is dearly missed.
He was predeceased by his parents and Aaron Thomas of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He is survived by Jean Shepherd of North Wilkesboro; Elliot and Danielle Thomas of Charlotte; Pod Wyatt of North Wilkesboro; Elaine Moretz of Ennice; James, Deborah, and Emily Hershman of Leesburg and Fairfax, Virginia; and numerous friends and relatives in Forsyth, Wilkes, and Alleghany Counties.
Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, April 25, 2024, at Mountlawn Memorial Park in North Wilkesboro with Rev. James Neese officiating. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the donor’s choice in Russell’s honor.
