The Rev. Dr. William Charles "Bill" McKinney, Jr., age 87, of North Wilkesboro died Sunday, October 6, 2013 at his home.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at Welcome Home Baptist Church with Rev. Jeff Collins and Rev. Paul Hugger officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Entombment will be at Scenic Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 Tuesday evening at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

The Rev. Dr. McKinney was born September 6, 1926 in Mitchell County to William Charles, Sr. and Annie Belle Thompson McKinney. He served overseas as a Ranger in the United States Army during World War II in Manila, Philippines and then at McArthur's headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Wake Forest University, followed by both the Bachelor of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He served as associate pastor of English Road Baptist Church in High Point, pastor of Gum Springs Baptist Church in Moncure and pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church in Lawndale before moving to North Wilkesboro to be Director of Missions for the Brushy Mountain Baptist Association. During his ministry, he made several foreign mission trips to Haiti, Jamaica, Brazil, and Chile. During his years in North Wilkesboro, he witnessed at the homeless shelter and was involved in the NASCAR racetrack ministry and ministries at MerleFest. He was heavily involved with Wilkes Day School where he served as president of the board for many years and spearheaded the fundraising and building of a much needed new facility. After his retirement in 1991, he continued to serve as interim pastor for several different churches in Wilkes County and as consultant to the Ashe Baptist Association. During his ministry, he was a pastor, a mediator, a counselor, and a "humble servant of God."

He was preceded in death by a brother, Brown McKinney.

He is survived by: his wife, Robbie Elizabeth Shuford McKinney of the home, two daughters, Charlene McKinney Hicks and husband, Charles, Donna McKinney Heiser and husband, Chuck all of Sanford; four grandchildren; Patrick Hicks and wife, Sidney, Christa Rice and husband, James, Kimberly Heiser, Jason Heiser and wife, Alyse; three great-grandchildren, Fiona Hicks, Sean Hicks, Remington Rice; two sisters, Betty Mace of Shelby, Joann Wilfong and husband, Harry of Hickory; four brothers, Neil McKinney and wife, Loretta of Salisbury, Zeb McKinney and wife, Chris, Sam McKinney and wife, Barbara all of Spruce Pine and James McKinney of Huntersville.
