Obituary for Rev. Dr. Monroe Huffman

Thomas Monroe Huffman, age 76, of Purlear passed away on Monday November 20, 2017 at Deerfield Ridge Assisted Living Center in Boone, NC after a four-year battle with dementia.

Funeral services will be held at 11am on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Wilkesboro, NC, with Rev. Brady Hayworth, Rev. David Key. Dr. Mark Huffman and Mr. Michael Huffman officiating. Burial with military honors presented by VFW Post 1142 will be at Boiling Springs Baptist Church in Purlear, NC. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 Friday evening, November 24, 2017 at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Monroe was born August 7, 1941, in Wilkes County to the late William Orr and Sarah Cletus Huffman.

Rev. Huffman pastored 3 churches for a total of 45 years, Harmony Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro for 17 years, White Plains Baptist Church in Roaring River for 18 and 1/2 years, and Center Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro for 9 and 1/2 years until his health declined. Pastor Monroe held 278 funerals and performed numerous wedding ceremonies. He was past Moderator of the Brushy Mountain Baptist Association, Elkin Baptist Association, and Stone Mountain Baptist Association while in the ministry. Also, he served as Chaplain at Wilkes Regional Medical Center and served on the Board of Directors for Wilkes Senior Center and Respite Care of Wilkes. He was a member of Center Baptist Church.

Monroe was a graduate of West Wilkes High School where he played varsity football for 4 years, drove a school bus, and was recognized for 12 years perfect attendance. Monroe received a Diploma in Biblical Studies from Liberty Bible Institute (now Liberty University) in Lynchburg, VA, a Bachelor of Divinity from West Lenoir Baptist School of Ministry in Lenoir, NC, a Doctor of Ministry from Southern Baptist School in Jacksonville, FL, and a Doctor of Theology from Andersonville Baptist Seminary in Camilla, GA.

Monroe served in the United States Army in Okinawa, Japan from 1966-1968 during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged with a rank of Sergeant E-5.

Monroe married Lois Royall Huffman on November 12, 1960 and they recently celebrated 57 years together. They have one son, Thomas Mark Huffman (April Church), one grandson, Thomas Michael Huffman (Rachel Ervin), one great-granddaughter, Emmerson Lilly, and one great-grandson, August Grey.

In addition to his parents, Monroe was preceded in death by two brothers, David Elmore Huffman, Sr, and John Franklin Huffman, Sr. He is survived by his family listed above and two brothers, William Howard Huffman (Ann Ray), and William Orr Huffman, Jr (Martha Pennell), and two sisters Ora Dean Roten (Bob) and Betty Sue Adams (J.T.), several nieces, nephews and church families.
