Obituary for James Eric Payne

Mr. James Eric Payne died surrounded by his family at his home on Tuesday, November 7, 2017. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on November 18, at 2 pm with Rev. Ann Dieterle officiating. The family will receive in the parish house after the service.

A native of Wilkes County, Eric Payne was born on July 26, 1942 to Dorman Thomas and Effie Beshears Payne. He graduated from Wilkes Central High School in 1960 and went on to earn a dual degree in Industrial Relations and Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1964. After graduation, he joined his father in the life insurance business with Jefferson Standard but soon left to pursue his dream of opening his own business. In 1969, he started Payne Power Equipment which he operated for nearly 50 years before retiring in 2017.

He was a charter member of the North Wilkesboro Rotary Club, serving a term as Treasurer and was a volunteer Ghost Tour Guide with the Wilkes Heritage Museum for many years. He served as Chairman of the Wilkesboro Historic Preservation Commission for two terms. He was a talented artist and drew editorial cartoons for the Wilkes Journal Patriot and the Mooresville Times in the 1980’s. He also drew automotive cartoons for the “Journey With Olds” publication. He loved his cabin in the mountains and playing music on his accordion.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marilyn Osborne Payne, daughters, Ellen Payne (husband Brian Markle) of Charlotte, NC; Stephanie Wilser (husband Jimmy) of Cary, NC; three grandchildren, Erin and Aidan Wilser and Zachary Markle, and his brother Elwin Payne and family of Greensboro, NC.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Wilkes Heritage Museum, PO Box 935, Wilkesboro, NC 28697 or the Humane Society of Wilkes, PO Box 306 North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.
