Obituary for Gary Wayne Coffey

Gary Wayne Coffey, age 65 of Wilkesboro, peacefully went to join his Savior on Monday, June 18, 2018, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, June 23rd, 2018 at First Baptist Church of North Wilkesboro with Dr. Bert Young and Dr. N. Nelson Granade, Jr. officiating. Entombment will be in Scenic Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:30 prior to the service in the Wayland Hall.

Gary was born August 25, 1952, in Louisville, KY. He was the son of Wayne Monroe Coffey and Marjorie Watson Coffey. He was preceded in death by his parents. Gary was a 1970 graduate of Wilkes Central High School and a 1974 graduate of North Carolina State University. He earned a degree in Industrial Engineering with a concentration in furniture manufacturing. He was a member of First Baptist Church of North Wilkesboro where he served on the Board of Deacons and as Head Usher for the church. Gary was the President of Piedmont Wood Products, Inc.

Gary was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. In addition, Gary possessed a great passion for historical preservation and enjoyed lecturing about US and world history. He served on the Board of Trustees for Wilkes Heritage Museum for many years. Gary was an active member of the James B. Gordon Sons of Confederate Veterans, where he was the founding commander who served from 1995-1998, 2007-2011, and 2016-2017.

Gary is survived by his wife, Hope Faircloth Coffey of the home; a daughter, Ashton Coffey MacDonald and husband Tyler of Lewisville; a sister, Kelia D. Coffey of Lewisville; a brother, Rick E. Coffey and wife Tamara of Lenoir; a brother-in-law, Jay Faircloth and wife Susan of Cary; cousin Christy Lynch and husband Jim of Suffolk, Virginia; and honorary family members Robin F. Weant of Lewisville, and David and Gwen Temple of North Wilkesboro.
